CAPITAL DISTRICT 3D PRINTATHON


I participated in a 24 hour long 3D printing competition the summer of my senior year in high school with two students from RPI and placed 1st in the event.


The challenge was to design the most effective wind turbine to generate the most power.

Due to the extremely limited time constraints we designed a modular system of fins and center hubs to quickly test different combinations. We printed a variety of center hubs with different amount of fins and multiple different blade designs, all with the same common mounting system. This saved printing time as we could reuse the same parts for multiple configurations, greatly increasing the amount of different tests we could run.

After our testing we finally settled on a 8 curved blade design as the most efficient. This rapid iteration, combined with thorough documentation and a clear presentation led us to place 1st in the competition.
